Lake Tahoe is a masterpiece of nature and was created in a nutshell, the Tahoe Basin was formed about five to ten million years ago by the rising and falling of the land due to the shifting of geologic faults.
Tremendous forces began the western tilt of the Sierra Nevada block. As a result, two principal parallel faults developed. The eastern margin created the Carson Range and the western margin created the Sierra Nevada. The up-thrown fault blocks created the highest peaks in the region. The down-thrown fault blocks sank to create a deep v-shaped valley, now called the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The eastern margin created the Carson Range and the western margin created the Sierra Nevada. The up-thrown fault blocks created the highest peaks in the region. The down-thrown fault blocks sank to create a deep v-shaped valley, now called the Lake Tahoe Basin. Today, the highest point in the Tahoe Basin is Freel Peak at 10,881 feet.
The deepest part of Lake Tahoe is near Crystal Bay, measuring a water depth of 1,645 feet.

The Monterey Bay is home to one of North America's deepest and largest submarine canyons. Larger than the Grand Canyon, this deep ocean environment begins less than ½ mile from shore and extends to a depth of over 2 miles. Off shore traveling currents along the canyon walls create upwellings, which send plankton and nutrient rich waters to the surface. This is the basis of the ocean's food chain. The canyon brings this deep-water environment within reach of our boats just a few miles out. In essence, Monterey Bay has become a gathering place for marine mammals, sea birds, and fish alike..

Alcatraz and history go hand in hand. Once home to some of America's most notorious criminals, the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to the Rock.
The presence of infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud helped to establish the island's notoriety.
To this day, Alcatraz is best known as one of the world's most legendary prisons.
Many people, though, are unaware of the wealth of other stories to be learned on the island. Alcatraz is now home to rare flowers and plants, marine wildlife, and thousands of roosting and nesting sea birds. Civil War-era buildings dotting the island give insight into the 19th century when the island served as both a harbor defense fort and a military prison.
You can also see visible reminders of the American Indian Occupation that started in 1969 after the prison closed, highlighting an important milestone in the American Indian rights movement.
